Why Does My Toilet Keep Running? (Evercore Plumbing Vancouver)

A running toilet is one of the most common plumbing problems in Vancouver homes. When a toilet keeps running, water continuously flows from the tank into the bowl, and the fill valve never shuts off completely. This not only wastes a large amount of water but can also significantly increase your utility bill. In most cases, a running toilet is caused by worn or misaligned internal components inside the tank.

The most frequent cause is a worn or faulty flapper. The flapper is the rubber seal at the bottom of the tank that lifts during a flush and closes afterward to stop water from flowing. Over time, flappers can harden, warp, or become misaligned, preventing a proper seal. When this happens, water slowly leaks into the toilet bowl, and the fill valve constantly runs to refill the tank.

Another common cause is a malfunctioning fill valve. If the fill valve is clogged with mineral buildup, improperly adjusted, or simply worn out, it may fail to shut off when the tank reaches the proper water level. This results in continuous water flow and a toilet that never stops running. In some cases, the float is set too high, causing water to reach the overflow tube and create a constant refill cycle.

Issues with the chain connecting the flush handle to the flapper can also cause problems. If the chain is too tight, too loose, or tangled, the flapper won’t close properly. Even a small misalignment can allow water to leak into the bowl and trigger the fill valve to run continuously.

Dual‑flush toilets are particularly prone to running issues if the flush mechanism wears out or sticks due to debris or mineral deposits. When any part of the flushing mechanism fails to return to the closed position, the tank cannot seal properly and water continues to flow.

High water pressure inside the home can also cause a running toilet. If the pressure is too high, the fill valve may struggle to close fully, allowing water to continue flowing. Homes with a failing pressure reducing valve (PRV) often experience this issue.

Although a running toilet may seem like a small inconvenience, it can waste hundreds of liters of water each day and lead to costly utility bills. The good news is that most repairs are quick, inexpensive, and can be completed during a single service visit.
